28.07.15 Other pizzerias I would recommend: If it came down to Pizza Express and Pizza Pilgrims I might opt for the former. I seem to be in the minority here and let’s face it, if it came down to Pizza Hut or Pizza Pilgrims, I would definitely choose Pizza Pilgrims. My issue is that the pizza wasn’t (very nice that is) and therein the problem lies. Just not great – and for me that is what a pizza has to be, great.Īt the time of writing there are two permaent outposts ( Dean St, & Carnaby St) and the van that brought them fame and (we presume) fortune which is currently parked on top of Bussey Building Rooftop in Peckham. I would like to stress that the staff at Carnaby Street were really, very nice. After liberally dousing my pizza (Kim L followed suite) in chilli flakes, and a questionable amount of salt and pepper, it did taste better. It was all just a bit tasteless to the point that I had to ask the (very nice) waitress if she had any chilli flakes. My Salsiccia e Friarielli was none of those things. As a rule, I like my pizza thin, crispy and piping hot. For a serious pizza hound like Kim L, this was a problem. When it arrived, the first thing we noticed was that it was soggy. Kim L opted for a can of Coke (£2.00) and the Aubergine Parmigiana (Margherita with roasted aubergine, parmesan, baby plum tomatoes & garlic – £9.00). I opted for a can of the classic San Pellegrino Limonata (£2.00) with the Salsiccia e Friarielli (white pizza with fresh fennel sausage, chilli, wild broccoli, fior di latte, parmesan, basil, olive oil – £10.00). Except, I kind of wished I hadn’t.īefore we get into the ‘whys’ let’s cover the ‘whats’. Like, if you are into pizza then you take a pilgrimage there. I had heard from sources unknown that PP was the s**t. We were walking down Carnaby Street at the time, doing our best to use the side streets in a bid to avoid the tourists when I suggested Pizza Pilgrims (PP). However, when she asked that sunny Sunday afternoon my answer was indeed ‘pizza’. ![]() Calories I could be dedicating to things like chocolate cake, calamari or that amaaaaaaazing french toast at Shackfuyu on Old Compton Street (yeah I have a sweet tooth). For me that dough most people call the ‘base’ is a complete waste of calories. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate it, it is just I don’t love it. I know that this is not going to be popular but I don’t like pizza. It is extremely rare that you will ever hear me answer ‘pizza’ to Kim L’s question of ‘What do you fancy?’
